After a controversy involving Imane Khelif’s gender emerged after her 66kg division triumph, her father vehemently supported his daughter.
The decision follows Khelif’s disqualification from the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year due to her inability to fulfill the gender eligibility requirements.
Khelif gets authorized to participate in the women’s boxing event at the Paris Olympics, joining Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan.
The round-of-16 combat between the Algerian, who was born and brought up as a female, and Italy’s Angela Carini took place on Thursday, 1 August. Carini chose to end the contest after 46 seconds.
According to her coach, Carini said that she couldn’t continue because of the discomfort in her nose.
