Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, in his home in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, according to a social media statement from the Vatican news agency.
Despite the fact that he was clearly very sick, I was glad to see him yesterday. However, he offered the homily below in the early days of COVID, and for that I will always remember him.
It was very stunning. May his soul rest in peace. Since Pope Gregory III more than a millennium ago, Francis was the first non-European pope, the first Jesuit pope.
The first pope from the Americas, the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere.
His passing initiates the somber process of choosing a new pope, which culminates in a plume of white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel and the papal funeral in the days that follow.
