Wynn-Williams’ testimony, which came months after other whistleblowers said that Facebook disregarded internal warnings about hazardous content in order to increase engagement metrics.
Adds to the mounting criticism of Meta’s global procedures.
The former policy director alleges that although Meta has made numerous assertions that it protects user privacy and opposes foreign censorship, the company’s internal reality painted a quite different picture.
The company’s leadership “ignored warnings that this would provide backdoor access to the Chinese Communist Party.
Allowing them to intercept the personal data and private messages of American citizens,” according to Wynn-Williams, after Meta built “a physical pipeline connecting the United States and China.”
She said that only because politicians “stepped in” did Congress succeed in preventing Chinese access to user data belonging to Americans.
