One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “You can clearly see Denzel say ‘do not put your hands on me’ and then the guy does it again. What a clown.”
Another added: “This is exactly why celebs snap sometimes. They get grabbed, pulled, touched constantly and are expected to smile through it. Denzel handled it better than most would.”
Despite the red carpet drama, Washington’s evening ended on a high. Cannes favorite Spike Lee made a surprise appearance to present him with an honorary Palme d’Or.
“This is a total surprise for me!” Washington said, holding the prestigious award. “I’m a little emotional, but from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.”
Lee, who has collaborated with Washington on numerous projects including Malcolm X, called him “my brother” as he presented the award. The moment drew cheers and a standing ovation.
