Many are accusing Marvel of “whitewashing” for casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, after their previous casting of Iron Man.

Fans also feel that an essential part of Doctor Doom’s backstory is being glossed over, which is another gripe with the actor’s hiring. One critic of Marvel’s casting choice said, “This is straight-up whitewashing.”

Somebody else says, “Doctor Doom is not a white man.” Thirdly, “Hollywood keeps messing it up with Doom,” which is someone’s favorite comic book villain.

“If you’re going to complain about RDJ as Doctor Doom, the whitewashing really should be front and center,” someone else remarks. To me, that’s the most pressing problem at the moment.

The practice of whitewashing occurs in media when white performers play non-white roles or downplay the characters’ background.
