Patricia was married to Alfred Roy Carey for thirty years, divorcing him when the singer was just three years old. She had two daughters, Alison and Mariah, and one son, Morgan.
Patricia was a gifted vocalist who studied as an opera singer and vocal instructor at the esteemed Juilliard, much like her Grammy-winning daughter.
The singer acknowledged in her 2020 biography, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that her connection with her mother was complex throughout her life:
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.” It’s always been a rainbow of feelings rather than just black and white.
“There are many prickly emotions in our connection, including pride, grief, humiliation, thankfulness, envy, adoration, and disappointment. My heart is connected to my mother’s via a complex affection.”
