After expressing their sincere remorse for the tragedy, the Ugandan Athletics Federation said that Cheptegei had “suffered severe injuries.”
In a statement posted on social media, the federation also seemed to claim that her Kenyan lover was the one who “poured petrol and set fire on her.”
Concerns over the increasing violence against female athletes in Kenya—some of which have been fatal—have been highlighted by this occurrence.
According to CBS News, the attack on Cheptegei occurred two years after Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was discovered dead in Iten, a well-known running destination in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
