On the first day of her new employment, her mother was dragged beneath a bus and died.

Her origins are unknown to me. I slammed the brakes, came to a stop, climbed off the bus, and sprinted in the direction of the pedestrian as soon as I saw the wheels above her. I kept my distance from her.

Hailey walked into her daughter’s room before leaving and informed her that she would return for lunch. She was “determined to get to work” despite being aware of her tardiness.
