Sex offenders in the UK, including paedophiles and rapists, could be subject to chemical castration under new government proposals being explored by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
The move comes as studies suggest that the use of libido-suppressing drugs can reduce reoffending rates by nearly two-thirds.
Mahmood is reportedly preparing to roll out the treatment across 20 prisons in England and Wales, with a view to establishing a nationwide programme.
According to a government source quoted by The Sun:
“For too long, we have turned a blind eye to the threat sex offenders pose, considering the solutions too difficult or unpalatable.
Shabana isn’t squeamish about doing what it takes to protect the public. As always, she will grab this problem by the proverbials.”
