At the Paris Olympics, Noah Lyles established a new personal best in the 100-meter final and won the gold medal.
Lyles recovered from a sluggish start and finished within a hair’s breadth of Kishane Thompson, who had been leading going into the last ten meters. At the final line, Lyles barely beat out the other competitor by 0.005 seconds.
Lyles, the reigning Olympic champion, set a new personal best with a final time of 9.784 seconds, while Thompson crossed the finish line in 9.789 seconds.
With the bronze medal won by fellow American sprinter Fred Kerley in 9.81 seconds, the United States now has two more medals in its ever-increasing total.
Amid wild cheers as the competitors were paraded onto the field before the final began, Lyles stood out as the most gregarious, skipping over the track in a peculiar but distinctive way.
