Passengers are forced onto the aircraft wing as an American Airlines airliner catches fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated: “After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides.”

According to reports, the engine of American Airlines Flight 1006 caught fire as it was taxiing on the runway, carrying 172 passengers and six crew members.

The Independent claims that the pilot informed Denver’s air traffic controllers that the Boeing was having some engine problems but claimed it wasn’t an emergency.

The respondent added, “American 10,006, uh, 1006 just to verify not an emergency still, correct?” according to the report’s audio recording. “Nah, we just have a high engine vibration.

So we are cruising slower than normal,” the pilot said. However, staff could be heard reporting the “engine fire” over the radio, prompting mayday calls to be sent shortly after the landing.
