On camera, Joe pulls a gun on Bronte to prevent him from fleeing as the police arrive, and she (inexplicably) survives the shooting, strangling, and drowning.
Joe begs Bronte to murder him at this point, obviously preferring death to going to court, but she declines to offer him the simple solution.
But as he is being jailed, she unintentionally shoots him in the penis after telling him, “You are going to live the rest of your life alone.”
This is precisely what takes place. In his final voiceover, Joe, who has been sentenced to life in jail without the possibility of release, continues to deny responsibility for his acts, stating:
