Photo of Sydney University Students Turning Their Backs on Jewish Speaker Sparks Outrage

A photo showing University of Sydney students turning their backs on a Jewish speaker during a heated student council meeting has triggered widespread backlash and accusations of antisemitism.

The incident occurred during the Student Representative Council (SRC) general meeting on Wednesday.

Where the activist group Students Against War pushed to reject a national definition of antisemitism adopted by Universities Australia.

That definition includes language that classifies certain forms of anti-Zionism—such as calls for the elimination of Israel—as antisemitic.

During the meeting, a council member argued:

“Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism. That’s why there is no such thing as a two-state solution. The obvious solution is a one-state solution. There’s no such thing as Jewish self-determination in Israel.”
