Photo of Sydney University Students Turning Their Backs on Jewish Speaker Sparks Outrage

In a joint statement, major national and state Jewish organizations condemned the conduct as “openly antisemitic.”

University Responds

The University of Sydney emphasized that the SRC is an independent student body, but confirmed it had engaged with both sides before the meeting.

“We reminded participants to conduct the meeting respectfully and in accordance with university policies and the law,” a spokesperson said. “Nearly 200 students attended, which represents a small fraction of the total student body.”

SRC President Angus Fisher said the meeting was peaceful and orderly, noting there were no threats, heckling, or shouting.

“The SRC rejects all forms of racism, including antisemitism and Islamophobia,” Fisher stated.
