“It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio – the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters for my whole career,” Lady Gaga wrote in a previous post to X.
“I was devastated when I had to cancel years ago due to my hospitalization, as I had been dying to come perform for you for years.”
“It meant so much to me that you recognized that I needed that time to recover.” At least until 2028, similar concerts are planned to occur in May each year.
In the days preceding the performance, almost 500,000 tourists descended upon the city, more than doubling the original estimate.
Rio officials have a history of using Copacabana Beach to host large-scale events.
An estimated 1.6 million people attended Madonna’s performance last year, while Rod Stewart’s 1994 New Year’s Eve performance drew 4 million people to the beach.
