Last Sunday, I had a moment of introspection as I entered the church. I observed a lady with many piercings and tattoos who was probably in her 40s.
I learned as a child that the church is a place of humility and reverence, and that dressing respectfully is a means to respect the hallowed place.
Her daring look caused me to reevaluate my views on what constitutes “appropriate” church dress. Were my opinions on church attire out of date? Should there be dress codes at houses of worship?
My conventional beliefs were shaken when I saw this woman’s unique style. After the ceremony, I gently pointed out that her outfit appeared.
Too daring for church and that a more modest appearance could be more appropriate. “How I look has nothing to do with you,” was her straightforward reply.
This led me to question if my uneasiness was due to my own convictions rather than something in particular alarming about her looks.
