Women have told horrific stories of being transferred to the facilities for not ‘obeying’ sexual assault at home, then flogged or kept up in isolation until they’reconcile’ with their abusers.
Campaigning to destroy the homes, Sarah Al-Yahia told the Guardian that her father had threatened to send her to one of the residences as a young kid “if I didn’t obey his sexual abuse”.
‘If you are sexually assaulted or get pregnant by your brother or father you are the one sent to Dar al-Re’aya to maintain the family’s reputation,’ she said.
She said women might have to choose between the terrible conditions inside the camps and ongoing abuse at homeāan unthinkable decision.
Abusive relatives have apparently killed some shortly after release.
One woman told the Guardian she complained about her father and brothers and was sent to Dar al-Re’aya.
