The A1 was closed for hours due to the early-morning collision between junctions J73 (Swalwell) and J75 (Denton), which resulted in heavy traffic.
After the car wreckage was taken away, all lanes were released today after traffic was held off from around 2:30 am until 3 pm.
What happened in the moments before the crash
In the Whickham neighborhood of Gateshead, Northumbria Police reported that officers attempted to pull over a dark gray BMW M Sport vehicle due to “concerns about the manner it was being driven.”
After driving away, it was later seen near Swalwell. According to the agency, a pursuit was authorized after road policing police got behind the vehicle around 2.25 in the morning.
