Whether his own choice had been influenced by his son’s transition: “It didn’t have any influence, but he [Gustavo] gave me strength and courage to face [the transition].”
Both Raphael and Gustavo often post updates to their over 25,000 Instagram followers, who show their support by applauding their bravery and candor.
Additionally, the father and son have expressed their annoyance at others using their “dead names”—the identities they were given prior to transitioning.
“Even though it is our right to have the social name respected in practice, respect rarely happens in fact,” they said on social media to highlight the value of respect.
Apart from being a student, Gustavo is also an actor. In order to further promote representation in the media, he has portrayed both cisgender and transgender characters in movies.
Currently, Gustavo is being treated in the Pediatric Endocrinology Unit at the Children’s Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas.
