In a secret meeting earlier this month, the BMA’s governing council decided to take action; but, specifics were not made public until later.
In an attempt to enhance NHS care for transgender adolescents, renowned pediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass offered more than thirty suggestions.
Her study, which took almost four years to complete, concluded that kids “caught in the middle” of a very contentious argument had been put on a course that would result in permanent changes.
She cautioned that the majority of the information currently available in favor of hormone treatment and puberty blockers was founded on “shaky foundations” and lacked strong scientific support.
In the end, the Cass Report found that there was “remarkably weak” evidence in favor of medical procedures and that transgender adolescents had been “let down” by the paucity of study.
