LOS ANGELES As 30,000 people fled Tuesday under massive smoke plumes that shrouded most of Los Angeles, a fast-moving wildfire.

Fuelled by dangerously high-speed Santa Ana winds threatened houses in some of California’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, causing traffic bottlenecks and property destruction.

The Palisades Fire burned 2,921 acres in the Pacific Palisades region between the coastal California communities of Santa Monica and Malibu.

Officials had previously issued a warning of exceptional fire risk due to strong winds that came after the region had prolonged dry weather. As of 12:30 a.m. local time, containment was not in place.

There were worries that additional neighbourhoods could have to evacuate as the fire expanded after authorities warned that.
