Passengers on a Lufthansa Airbus A321 flight from Frankfurt to Seville were unaware that, for nearly 10 minutes, there was no conscious pilot flying their plane.
Now, a Spanish investigation report released on May 15 has uncovered what really happened in the cockpit during those terrifying moments at 30,000 feet — and it’s sparking calls for a major aviation safety overhaul.

In February 2024, the routine Lufthansa flight was nearing the end of its journey when disaster silently struck.
With just 30 minutes left before landing, the captain left the cockpit to use the bathroom — a normal occurrence on long flights. At that point, the first officer appeared to be healthy and in full control.
But when the captain tried to return just eight minutes later, he was locked out.
