Social media users have attacked Blue Origin and Katy Perry, claiming that their space launch was merely a “joyride for the super-rich.”
This afternoon, Perry, Lauren Sanchez, and four other women successfully completed an all-female space journey aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket.
The A-list crew crossed the Karman Line, the recognized frontier of space, and reached an altitude of 62 miles (100 km) in 11 minutes.
Commenters, however, have called the project “ridiculous” and that it is really a “publicity stunt.”
“Let’s call it what it is and not tell ourselves that it is contributing meaningfully to science or space exploration,” Dr. Gareth Dorrian, a space scientist at the University of Birmingham, told MailOnline.
“I regrettably, I still believe that these flights are merely extravagant extravaganzas for the extremely wealthy.”
