Pop sensation Katy Perry, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, film director Kerianne Flynn, activist Amanda Nguyen, Jeff Bezos’ fiancé Lauren Sánchez, and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King were among those on board.
After carrying the capsule to the edge of space at almost twice the speed of sound, the New Shepard Rocket detached, giving the crew a brief period of weightlessness.
During that time, the crew capsule officially left Earth’s atmosphere and entered space by crossing the Karman Line.
After that, the capsule returned to Earth, causing the crew to scream as the parachutes unfolded.
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, was on hand to open the hatch when the New Shepard capsule landed within driving distance of the launch site just eleven minutes after it took off.
Many others were not as persuaded, despite Blue Origin’s claims that the all-female voyage was an uplifting time in spaceflight history.
