“collective efforts by healthcare providers, public health experts, governments, and other organizations” and that this could result in a reduction in cancer fatalities.
He stated, “It is the responsibility of local and state governments to eradicate food deserts by providing affordable, healthier alternatives to fast and ultra-processed foods in every ZIP code.”
He urged the federal government to increase the FDA’s oversight of food additives and processing, as well as to address the availability and diversity of healthier alternatives.
He suggested that physicians engage in discussions with their patients regarding the consumption of UPF products and advise
them to refrain from using them. He also recommended that grocery stores label UPF products and segregate them from healthful foods.
Dr. DeVito expressed his aspiration to establish a lengthy career in oncology and eventually practice in a time when
the United States has successfully combated early-onset gastrointestinal malignancies and the majority of his patients are over the age of 50.
