Making her theatrical debut at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952. In 1963, she joined the Royal National Theatre, where she was employed by the illustrious Laurence Olivier.
Smith became well-known as a major actress of her day because to her critically lauded theatrical performances, especially her depiction of Desdemona in “Othello.”

For which Smith received her first Academy Award for Best Actress, served as a catalyst for Smith’s move into the film industry.
For her role alongside Michael Caine in California Suite (1978), she took home her second Oscar, this time for Best Supporting Actress.
