A Mississippi church deacon is being hailed as a “hero” for his life-saving actions during this weekend’s Easter egg hunt shooting.

Deacon Eddie Shed was killed in what the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center (EMCC) in Gulfport described as a “senseless act of gun violence” at the church-sponsored.

Easter egg hunt for families at the Goldin Sports Complex on Prudie Circle on Saturday, April 12, at approximately 2:00 p.m. local time.

In relation to the shooting, which “began as a child custody dispute,” Tyran Deion Gable, 24, has subsequently been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Gulfport Police Department Lt. Jason Ducre confirmed to PEOPLE on Sunday, April 13.

According to WLOX, investigators think the shooting happened after a rumored argument between Gable and his child’s mother.
