“On March 12, we couldn’t contact Victoria.” After public protest, the journalist was freed a few days after being taken prisoner by a soldier and handed over to FSB operatives.
However, this encounter with the Russians wasn’t the last; in August 2023, Viktoriia vanished once again.
Before it was verified in April 2024 that she was being kept hostage once again, there were long-standing questions over her location, according to The Guardian.
She tragically passed away last September while in custody. She was just twenty-seven. Viktoriia’s corpse has now been repatriated to Ukraine, where it is suspected.
She was mistreated during her detention. According to Forbidden Stories, she is the first Ukrainian journalist known to have perished in Russian captivity.
The bones of Viktoriia were among the 757 bodies that were reportedly brought back to Ukraine from Russia in February.
