The seal in the canal that was ‘attacked by children’ has been put down.

And the fire department visited a body of water in the Haydock neighborhood of St Helens to examine a female adult seal that had been sighted nearby.

“The seal was incredibly sluggish and didn’t try to swim away from the onlookers.

“Sadly, the veterinarian who checked her discovered that she was terribly malnourished and dehydrated.

“The veterinarian advised that the seal should be put to sleep in order to stop additional suffering, and she promptly did so in-situ.

“This was a sad outcome for this very poorly seal but we’d like to thank the vet and the fire brigade for assisting us and working very late into the night.”
