The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) budget was an investment above those of any other nation or international body.
The largest reduction the NIH has ever seen, the Trump government suggests to slash the budget from $48 billion to $27 billion.
Many of the 27 institutions run by the NIH will be closed, and financing for those concentrated especially on conducting minority-health and international research is being eliminated totally.
Many people have already been let go, including the main researchers of several important studies on cancer, Alzheimer’s, HIV, and more even before these suggested cuts.
Among them was Dr Richard J. Youle, who for his work clarifying the function of cell death in Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative illnesses earned the Breakthrough Prize in 2021.
Every month, the US records tens of thousands of drug overdose deaths; the suggested budget reduces the financing for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration by almost $1 billion.
