The required household income is much higher in states where residences are already regarded as pricey.

For example, your household will need to earn almost twice as much in California to meet the same requirements.

To afford a typical California home, a household must earn $213,447. In that order, it is the third-highest number, after Hawaii and Washington, D.C.

The following are the top five states with the highest income requirements:

  • Columbia District: $240,09
  • $235,638 in Hawaii
  • $213,447 in California
  • New England: $174,392
  • $168,643 in Colorado
