Today, a comet is passing Earth; it won’t be seen for 160,000 years.

On Monday, January 13, comet C/2024 G3 will approach close to Earth tonight. Not in a cataclysmic sense, however. You will be able to see it race over our night.

Sky at a safe enough distance. Think of it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to view Comet C/2024 G3, assuming you survive for another 160,000 years.

The comet will be 8.3 million miles from our sun and 8.7 million miles from Earth at its closest point. In terms of comments, it will be quite bright; in fact,

It may even be more brilliant than some of the stars in the sky. This passing comet won’t be visible to you for another 160,000 years.

Those of us north of the equator will be able to witness Comet C/2024 G3 when it returns to the sun, but regrettably, the southern hemisphere will get the finest view of it.

Later in the month, as the comet gets further away from the sun, it will progressively become less visible. In the West, it will be seen near the horizon.
