Anxiety and fury were running through his head. He never thought he would see Amber’s mother, his ex-wife, again, yet she was sitting in a café as he was walking through the town.
Derek felt his heart skip a beat. Instead of going to the performance, had Amber decided to go see her mother?
Even if it was doubtful, he had to find out. Derek parked the vehicle, took a big breath, and attempted to relax. He approached Miranda, who raised her head in response.
“Derek?” Miranda opened her eyes wide and said, “I’m surprised to see you here.” “Has Amber been to see you lately?” Derek inquired without even attempting to strike up a conversation.
Why? No. Why would she do that? Miranda replied, looking about her warily. She fled from her home a week ago.
Derek continued, his voice strained with worry, “Since then, she hasn’t been in contact or left any trace.”
