Horrifying footage shared online shows the Cuauhtémoc drifting backwards, its lights glowing eerily in the night.
Moments before all three masts violently snapped, sending debris crashing onto the deck and into the East River.
“There was someone dangling from a harness at the top of the mast for at least 15 minutes before they were rescued,” eyewitness Lily Katz told the Associated Press.
Nick Corso, a Brooklyn resident who witnessed the crash, described the panic:
“Lots of screaming, sailors hanging from the masts… one man waving for people to get off the walkway. It was pure chaos.”
