Types of eye infections and how to treat them

How Frequently Do Eye Infections Occur?

Eye infections are quite prevalent and are the reason for a large number of annual office or hospital visits. Contact lens wearers are much more likely to have eye infections.

Eye Infection Types

The following are some common forms of eye infections:

Conjunctivitis: Also referred to as pink eye, conjunctivitis is caused by bacterial or viral infections of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva. Although there is a noncontagious allergy type, pink eye is very contagious when it is microbiological.

A sty is a little pimple or lump that appears on the outside of your eyelid. It is brought on by an infection of the oil glands in that area of the eye by bacteria.

Keratitis: Keratitis is an infection of the cornea caused by a virus, bacterium, or fungus. An eye injury may also cause it. Keratitis is very common in those who use contact lenses.
