And the result was substantially greater than the previously reported 67 km/s/Mpc. According to this, the cosmos may be 10% younger than previously believed.
With this finding, the field of cosmology has been thrown into disarray. At a 2019 conference, Nobel Prize-winning astronomer David Gross referred to it as a “crisis.”
At first, it was believed that the finding was a measurement mistake caused by mistaking Cepheid stars for normal stars inside the Hubble’s lens. However, the far more precise JWST confirmed the new discovery.
The Astrophysical Journal Letters released a research on February 6th that showed how drastically incorrect our current view of the cosmos might be.
“With measurement errors negated, what remains is the real and exciting possibility we have misunderstood the universe,” said Riess, the lead research author.
