Why Mark Zuckerberg could have to sell WhatsApp and Instagram

The argument made by Meta

Chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead accused the FTC of claiming that its “only competitors are Snapchat and an app called MeWe” in a post on its website headlined The FTC’s Weak Case Against Meta Ignores Reality.

The trial “will show what every 17-year-old in the world knows,” according to Meta, who also claims that Instagram users have had a better experience since it took over the network.

Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp compete with Chinese-owned TikTok, YouTube, X, iMessage, and many more.

Newstead calls the FTC’s case “weak” overall and notes that Meta is “confident” in its position, accusing it of “ignoring how the market actually works and chas[ing] a theory that doesn’t hold up in the real world.”

But should Meta lose? Zuckerberg might be compelled to sell WhatsApp and Instagram as a result.
