According to Geoscience Australia’s website, over 3500 people reported experiencing the earthquake by 7.45am, including those in Sydney.
According to Professor Cummins, “it’s been widely felt… some of (the reports) were moderate and strong shaking.”
According to Professor Cummins, stress from other borders gradually increased inside the plate, leading to fault failure, even though Australia lacked an active tectonic plate boundary like New Guinea or New Zealand.
He said that they just collapse at a far slower rate than they would be close to tectonic plate borders, where strain rates are significantly higher.
The tremor roused Hunter MP Dan Repacholi, who reported that his staff was on the ground to assist with any damage.
