Why Pope Leo XIV was chosen as the first American pope in history

The head of the Catholic church needed a new leader after Pope Francis passed away, and his successor was named just two days before the vote.

The news that American Cardinal Robert Prevost had been elected as the 267th pope accompanied the white smoke that erupted from the Sistine Chapel on May 8.

He was the first American pope in history, having been born in Chicago. Naturally, Donald Trump responded to the news by calling it a “great honor” for the United States.

Trump said on Truth Social: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his recent appointment as Pope. The fact that he is the first American Pope is such tremendous honor.

“What a thrill and a tremendous honor for our nation. I’m excited to meet Pope Leo XIV. It will be a time of great significance.

It’s interesting that Prevost decided on Pope Leo XIV, a name with strong Catholic connotations.
