‘X motions’ performed by a fighter towards an opponent they lost against in 2024 Paris Olympics women’s boxing bout have sparked controversy, since the opponent allegedly violated gender eligibility tests the previous year.
In the semi-finals of the women’s 57kg featherweight boxing event at Roland Garros, Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan defeated Esra Yildiz Kahraman of Turkey by unanimous decision. Kahraman was her opponent.
So far, Lin has a perfect score of 5-0 in her battles. On Saturday, August 10, she will compete in the final against Julia Szeremeta of Poland.
Yildiz Kahraman, a Turk, made X-sign motions with her two index fingers to the audience during the latter moments of the bout between Lin and herself, which caused controversy.
The two boxers began by exchanging middle-of-the-ring niceties; then Lin made her way to her corner.
