“Back then it was a big deal,” recalls Aiken, who just released Christmas Bells Are Ringing to commemorate his comeback to the music industry.
When he came out, Aiken, who was then performing in Broadway’s Spamalot, saw a sharp decline in ticket sales.
“The concert sold out and was standing room only for the first four months that I was there. The week after the release of that cover, you can really examine the ticket sales,”
He explains. “Ticket sales moved from being quite strong to declining the week after the release of the cover. Following that, Spamalot closed a few months later.
He goes on to say, “We are in a very different time,” “I lost maybe 50 percent of the fan base.” Aiken is “thrilled” to know “that’s not the world we live in” anymore, but he still has no regrets.
“Many individuals who come out today see increases in their popularity as a result of it… It’s the exact reverse of what occurred.
