After discovering that the purported pandas they saw at the Shanwei Zoo were really simply canines painted to resemble the endangered animals, Chinese zoogoers are furious.
Visitors discovered the ruse when one of the so-called pandas started panting and barking like a dog, local media said.
Then, videos of the decorated puppies started making the rounds on the internet. They include two “pandas” walking about the cage, their curly tails easily apparent.
The zoo first attempted to downplay the accusations by saying the visible dogs belonged to a species known as “panda dogs.”
