Imane Khelif reached a major milestone by winning her maiden Olympic gold medal following weeks of intense public attention and scrutiny about her gender eligibility.
In August, she won a unanimous decision in the women’s 66kg boxing final against Yang Liu of China.In front of fervent admirers, many of whom were Algerian, the 25-year-old Algerian celebrated this historic accomplishment at the storied Roland Garros.
There were applause and encouragement all around, and the atmosphere was electrifying. In addition to being a personal triumph for Khelif, this victory created history.
In addition to becoming the first Algerian boxer, male or female, to win an Olympic gold, she was the first Algerian woman to do it since 1996.
