Our deepest sympathies are with Jon Bon Jovi and his loved ones at this difficult time of loss.

The mother of Jon Bon Jovi, Carol A. Bongiovi, died on Tuesday, July 9, at the age of 83, three days before to her 84th birthday. Per PEOPLE’s reporting, she passed away at New Jersey’s Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

“Our mother was a force to be reckoned with,” Bon Jovi, 62, said in a statement he sent to PEOPLE, expressing the family’s grief. Her optimistic outlook and boundless energy molded this family. Her absence will be deeply felt.

Carol was a successful businesswoman and the brains behind her son’s band’s fan club. She met her future husband,

John Bongiovi, Sr., while serving as a Playboy bunny in the United States Marine Corps in 1959. She was originally from Erie, Pennsylvania.

After settling in Sayreville, New Jersey, the couple built a family there. After Carol’s passing, the family relocated to Holmdel, New Jersey.
