“This is the last school in Madison you would have thought this would happen,” he said. “The threat has passed, but it ain’t over.”
According to a school administrator, students who were instructed to lock down after today’s incident “handled themselves magnificently” and understood that the scenario was not a practice.
They were obviously afraid… At an evening press conference, Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of primary and school relations, said, “This is a drill, this is just a drill,” when we practice.
“They knew it was real when they heard ‘lockdown, lockdown’ and nothing else, and they handled themselves brilliantly,” she added.
According to Wiers, she was teaching at the time, and after the alarm, she tried to lock the door and relocate the kids to a secure area of the room.
In an update this evening, Barnes said that police are still looking into a potential motivation for the tragic shooting that occurred today.
As of right now, Barnes said, “we’re still working on a motive, trying to determine why this happened.”
The shooter’s name, age, and gender were not disclosed. Later, there will be another police update. Barnes said, “We don’t want to jeopardize any aspect of the investigation.”
