‘Actually nonbinary’: BBC Olympics announcer corrects co-host for failing to use ‘they/them’ pronouns while referring to the female shot putter

“Well, we can’t see them very well,” Sawyers said, making careful to include the phrase “them.”

Raven Saunders isn’t binary; she’s just hiding behind the mask. It’s not uncommon for them to wear unique outfits. Do you think that’s acceptable? “I don’t see why not,” the 30-year-old decided.

According to Backley, “why not, indeed” was the response.

While Saunders uses her sports platform to advocate for political causes, she has not been too rigid about pronoun use, even though she claims to identify as “nonbinary.”

Two days before the whole pronoun controversy broke out, Saunders uploaded a video on Instagram in which she is addressed as “she” many times.

In December 2023, Saunders shared a photo with a text in which she repeatedly identified as a woman, rather than a “nonbinary.”
