After Cyclone Chido strikes the French territory of Mayotte, the death toll rises and may reach thousands.

Only military aircraft can fly into Mayotte’s major airport owing to considerable damage, and the island’s main hospital has sustained significant water damage to its maternity, emergency, critical care, and surgical departments.

According to the Associated Press, authorities are worried about access to clean drinking water, most telecommunications antennae.

Were knocked out of service, and electricity is down everywhere on the island except in the capital city of Mamoudzou.

The destruction was called “unimaginable” by the French Red Cross, and as relief operations get underway, drinking water, hygiene kits, and buckets to boil water have been sent out.

Cyclone Chido had storm surges of 13 to 28 feet along with its 140 mph winds, making it a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall.
