After learning that the woman had motor neurone disease, the elderly couple committed themselves.

“They were inseparable, lived for each other and their dog Fern, and did everything together throughout their marriage,” she added.

“They decided they wanted to fall asleep together,” she said.

“I respect my sister and Ian’s choice,” Ms. Todd said, sobbing as she described the “great sadness” of having to do this in private without friends and family present.

According to Ms. Todd, the Hunts were a “very sociable couple” who had been married for 49 years when they relocated to Cornwall in 2002.

During their lengthy walks with their dog Fern, Mrs. Hunt’s health began to worsen when she retired, and she realized something was amiss. Later, the inquest heard that she had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Ms. Todd said that Mrs. Hunt told her she loved her in a different tone and with assertiveness at the conclusion of their last phone contact.
