They also verified that the player who was reported by police to have had a “life-changing” injury after a shattered knee—a condition from which Joel Collins, 32, would need months to recover—was the goalie.
“We are relieved to report that Joel Collins is in good spirits and is currently undergoing surgery to repair a broken knee,” the statement said.
“This horrific event, in which some athletes were viciously assaulted while fleeing the locker rooms, is totally intolerable and was an extremely upsetting and terrifying experience for all those concerned.
“We are fully cooperating with the police and the South Wales Football Association in their investigations, and our primary at present is focussed on supporting all those affected at this time.”
“Following Saturday’s game vs Avenue Hotspurs, Llanrumney Athletic would first like to wish anyone injured in the incident a speedy recovery,” the team’s social media post said. Llanrumney Athletic has also strongly denounced the violence.
“We came here to watch football, and after a game, nobody should ever have to worry about whether they’ll make it to work the next day.
