After a remarkable recovery from her setbacks in Tokyo three years ago, Simone Biles had an unusual misstep at the Paris Summer Olympics, falling short of a gold medal for the first time in this competition.
She had hoped to further establish her legacy in France in the individual beam final, but Biles stumbled and fell from the apparatus.
In the event, Alice D’Amato of Italy won the gold medal, Zhou Yaqin of China took silver, and Manila Esposito of Italy won bronze.
Biles continued her stellar performance from the Paris Games on the floor, where she won the final. Having two out-of-bounds landings deducted six-tenths of a point left her with a score of 14.133,
placing her narrowly behind Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, who won the gold medal with a score of 14.166. In spite of these disappointments, Biles’ total Olympic performance is still outstanding.
